The Government has lost its case in the Supreme Court as judges have ruled that sending asylum seekers to Rwanda is illegal

We are unanimous that court of appeal was right ( to declare the Rwanda system unlawful) said the judges in the ruling this morning

Rwanda has “apparent misunderstanding” of its obligations under the Refugee Convention and “poor human rights record.”

The court said that Rwanda is not a safe third country and gave genuine concern that refugees faced the real risk of being returned to the country from which they fled.

The ruling leaves part of the Government’s Asylum seekers policy in tatters

Rishi Sunak told MPs during PM questions that he is willing to rewrite domestic law to get his Rwanda asylum plan implemented.

“If necessary I’m prepared to revisit our domestic legal framework.” he told the House of Commons

He added that his government is “finalising” a new treaty with Rwanda to address some of “challenges” raised by Supreme Court.

A large group of right wing Conservative MPs and peers is convening a meeting right now in the Commons to discuss their response to the Supreme Court’s decision on Rwanda.
