The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed that the Government is looking at” the option of exonerating all postmasters involved in the Horizon IT scandal.

Speaking to the BBC’s Sunday programme, Sunak said exonerating all postmasters was being “looked at” by the Justice Secretary.

The scandal, brought to the fire by ITV’s Drama last week, has seen the Post Office admit that between 1999 and 2015, more than 700 managers were accused of fraud due to flawed computer evidence.

However, fewer than 100 people have had their convictions quashed.

During the interview Sunak told Laura Kuenssberg that the  Post Office miscarriages of justice “all happened a long time ago, in the 1990s”.

Asked by Kuenssberg if the Justice Secretary was looking at whether all those convicted could be exonerated or the Post Office could be stripped of its role, Mr Sunak said:

“Obviously, there’s legal complexity in all of those things but he is looking at exactly those areas that you’ve described.” adding

“It is right that we find every which way we can do to try to make this right for the people who were so wrongfully treated at the time.”

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt told yesterday’s Today program he would do “everything” he could to speed up payments to the wrongly prosecuted sub-postmasters.
