The report to be discussed by Stockport Council next week says that four new railway stations could be built in the borough in the next few years
The report to be considered on the 8th June sets out The Stockport Transport Strategy 2026-2042, a long-term strategic framework for the development and prioritisation of transport across the borough
In the forward to the report the council sets out seven ambitious objectives that will help shape the future of the borough, driving investment, improving connectivity and supporting long-term transformation
across Stockport.
At its heart is strengthening Stockport’s role as the Southern Gateway to Greater Manchester, including
providing a transformed Stockport Station at the heart of a thriving town centre
Plans for the station Redeveloping Stockport station include a new eastern concourse, a new footbridge, a new Edgeley western entrance, refurbished subway, and better access.
For Stockport the confirmed extension of Metrolink to Stockport is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, a
transformational investment that will reshape how people move across the borough and beyond
eventually expanding into the wider borough through Tram-Train.
By connecting Stockport to the
wider Bee Network, it will deliver faster, greener and more joined-up journeys while unlocking new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
As for the new train stations work is progressing to deliver a new
Cheadle Station on the Chester to
Manchester (Mid-Cheshire) line next to The
Alexandra Hospital which is a key element
of the integrated Cheadle Town Investment
Plan.
Funding was approved in 2022, and full
planning permission for the scheme was
granted in October 2023.
The aim is that scheme delivery will start at the station over the coming year, with TfGM expected to take over operation and maintenance of the station site once the works are completed.
The council have also have historical considered the potential for a new rail station at High Lane with recognition to the impact this would have on Middlewood station, while a potential new rail station at Adswood on the Mid-Cheshire line is recognised likely be dependent of future tram-train proposals.
