The meeting to determine who will run Stockport Council will now be held in public and webcast

The council meeting, set for tomorrow evening was to be held in private but against fierce opposition the meeting will no longer be held behind closed doors.

The Lib Dems became the largest party in the council chamber by one seat, previously run by Labour after the local elections two weeks ago but any combination of parties could in effect take over the running in coalition with rumours last week that a Labour-Tory coalition could shut the Lib Dems out

Currently Labour’s Eloise Wilson leads the council and she has refused to step down meaning she can only be removed by a vote in the chamber tomorrow night

She told the Manchester Evening News that continuity and stability were crucial as Stockport emerged from the pandemic.

“I think our focus has to be we continue with the stability and competent leadership we have had, that’s both fiscally responsible and ambitious for the people of Stockport, and has taken seriously the crisis we have been in – and continue on that path and continue out of this crisis.
