Mark’s and Spencer stores in Denton and Stockport have been earmarked for closure as part of the stores restructuring programme announced this morning.

The high street giant said the staff entering consultation will be offered redeployment at other stores before redundancy is considered.

The announcement follows a disappointing Christmas period for M&S, when sales of both food and clothing fell.

“Stores will always be an integral part of our customer experience, alongside M&S.com, but we have to ensure we have the right offer in the right locations,” said Sacha Berendji, the retail operations director.

Stores in Birkenhead, Bournemouth, Durham, Fforestfach in Swansea, Putney and Redditch are due to close in April while the Stockport and Denton stores join  Andover, Basildon, Bridlington,, Falmouth, Fareham, and Keighley as being earmarked for closure.
