Britain will not take part in the US blockade on the Strait of Hormuz because doing so risks further increasing energy prices, Sir Keir Starmer has said this morning
In an interview on BBC5 Live the Prime Minister said that t all his focus – politically, diplomatically and in terms of military capability – is on attempting to reopen the Strait.
He says that British people are ‘paying the price’ ‘We are not supporting the blockade. All of the marshalling diplomatically, politically and capability – we do have minesweeping capability – that’s all focused on getting the straits open.’
‘That’s the way we get energy prices down as quickly as possible ‘What we’ve been doing is bringing countries together to keep the straits open and not shut. All the time the strait is shut or not that means oil and gas is not getting to market, the price is going up. It is vital that we get the strait open and fully open. The Gulf States were clear with me last week that they want freedom of navigation’
During the interview Starmer avoideds criticising US and Israel for launching initial invasion on which led to Iran shutting strait in retaliation.
“I’m not going to get involved in that,” he says, but reiterated that the UK will not be “dragged into” a war he believes has no legal basis or thought through plan.
