The government has dropped its plans requiring workers to sign up to its digital ID scheme in order to prove their right to work in the UK in another U turn

At the time it was announced, the scheme would have been in place by the end of this parliament in 2029.

However the Government has now said that it will be choice rather than being compulsory and Workers will be given the choice of using other documents to verify their identities.

The background to the about turn is said to be that Multiple ministers across government pushed to drop the mandatory component, arguing this would shift the conversation around digital IDs to a lighter tone about making it easier to engage with public services — and curtail (some) anti-establishment noises about state control.
