Bolton began life in Division One in winning style with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United on the opening day of the 2016/17 Sky Bet League One season.

Jay Spearing’s spectacular long-range volley was the difference between the two teams as Bolton finished the game with ten men after Darren Pratley was stretchered off after the home side having already made all three of their substitutions.

Oldham’s new manager Stephen Robinson fielded 10 new players but the Latics went down to a 3-0 defeat at Millwall.A Ben Thompson penalty putting the home team in front after 13 minutes, Aiden O’Brien scoring just before half time and Byron Webster sliding in a corner kick on the resumption to secure the three points

Two second half goals gave Bury all three points in their home opener against Charlton Athletic.

With five debutants in the team, and goalless first half, dominated by Bury, a second half penalty from Neil Danns and a cheeky tap in from Kelvin Etuhu along with a, well-deserved, clean sheet sealed the points.

Rochdale started the season with a  3-2 defeat to Peterborough United, after the visitors netted a late winner.

Andy Cannon volleyed the home side into an early lead abefore Marcus Maddison equalised for the visitors midway through the half.

Ian Henderson regained the lead for Dale from the penalty spot, and Chris Forrester levelled the scoring a for a second time in a breathless first half.
The tie was decided in the 89th minute when Taylor’s cross was met by the waiting Edwards, who headed into the net to clinch the points for the visitors 

Into the National League and Altrincham’s first game in the National Leagur  League North saw them share the points in a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Darlington. In a game that saw the home team twice go ahead, the second time with just a minute left in the clock,  the visitors levelled in the fifth minute of injury time from the penalty spot.

Salford City‘s debut in the National League North saw them sharing the points with a 1-1 draw at home to Gloucester.James Poole putting the Ammies ahead just after half time but a second half solo strike from Gloucester substitute Joe Parker denying the home team a well deserved three points.

FC United also shared the points in a thrilling 3-3 draw away at Chorley.FC fell behind after 10 minutes to a Sefton Gonzales strike but levelled when George Thomson miscued cross the flew into the goal and then taking the lead through Jerrome Wright.The home side were level before the break but FC took the lead for a second time thru George Thompson but were denied the three points when Stephen Jordan headed in a corner 6 minutes from times.

Stockport took all three points in a seven goal opening day thriller when they entertained Alfreton Town, Substitute Gary Stopforth striking the eventual winner in stoppage time, after Alfreton had pegged back a two-goal deficit following the interval.

There were contrasting fortunes for the two Tameside clubs in the National League North. Stalybridge opened the season with a one nil away win at Boston, Andy Owens scoring the only goal of the game after the home side had missed a penalty and Celtic playing the match with ten men for much of the second half after Chalmers received a second yellow.

Curzon Ashton were hit for six at home to Kidderminster in a nightmare opening day.Five nil down at half time with two for Arthur Gnahoua and strikes by Elton Ngwatala, Mani Dieseruvwe and Ashley Carter. Substitute Liam Truslove added another for the away team after the break with a consolation goal for Curzon  through Joe Guest.
