A remarkable coincidence led to two sisters staying on the same ward at Stepping Hill Hospital, and having their operations on the same day.

Pat McNair, 69 from needed a hip replacement, while her sister Lynn Amadi, 72 from had to have an operation on her knee. With Pat, this was her second hip replacement, with the previous one taking place last August.

Lynn’s operation was originally going to take place the previous week but had been rescheduled. When they saw each other on the same surgical ward, it came as a complete surprise to them both.

Pat and Lynn are very close and each wanted to look out for one another, and so on their request staff on Ward B3 re-arranged their beds so they could stay beside each other. By a further coincidence, they were also in the ward on Lynn’s wedding anniversary, and also on Mother’s Day. Pat’s son lives in Australia, but Lynn’s daughter visited both with presents.

With both sisters having their procedures on the same day, each one was keen to learn that the other was safe and well. Pat didn’t want to have her operation until she’d checked in with Lynn first, and ward staff made sure this was accommodated and that they were both kept well informed.

Both sisters were in hospital for three days. With both operations fully successful, both sisters were ready to go home on the same day as each other too, and Lynn’s husband took them both home, where they live just around the corner from each other.

Lynn said “It was such a surprise when we first saw each other, but The ward staff here have been absolutely incredible in keeping us together. Both Pat and agree we couldn’t have asked for better.”

Leanne Clifford Ward Sister for B3 said “Lynn and Pat have been a delight to have on the ward, they’re brought a lot of joy and laughter to us. Helping them to look out for each other has been a real pleasure.”
