Altrincham and Sale MP Sir Graham Brady has told a constituent that he has been given private assurances by Grant Shapps that the £3 billion branch of HS2 that cuts through his constituency will be scrapped

According to reports the MP wrote to say that the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps had told the Chairman of the 1922 back bench committee that the Golborne Link, which will connect HS2 south of Manchester to the West Coast line to Scotland will be scrapped

The link was included in the bill for the third stage of the HS2 project which was published in February

However the Guardian reported that Brady said this was simply to speed up the passing of the act

In his letter, Brady said: “I have received categorical, verbal assurances from the secretary of state that the government will table an amendment as part of the second reading of the bill. This will remove the Golborne spur from the legislation. This is expected to take place in the summertime. The only reason that the bill was introduced with the spur still in place is that a revised environmental impact assessment would have delayed the introduction of legislation.
