School children from across Tameside voiced the virtues of clean air in this year’s annual Singing Challenge.
The special event to promote singing, which is ran by Tameside Music Service and the Greater Manchester Music Hub, coincided with and focused on Clean Air Day 2023 on 15 June.
It consisted of two schools coming together to sing this year’s song as one massed choir. The two schools that performed were Oakdale Primary School and Yew Tree Primary School.
At the same time, many more children across Tameside and Greater Manchester performed this year’s song in their schools and venues.
This year the Singing Challenge coincided and focused on Clean Air Day 2023. As a result, the song for this year’s challenge was named the ‘Clean Air Challenge’, which was composed for the Greater Manchester Music Hub and the children of Greater Manchester, by Mike Edwards.
Clean Air Day is an important moment to raise awareness of the impact of air pollution, as air pollution is the single biggest environmental health risk in the UK.
Lots of children celebratingThe song was written to help encourage others to make simple changes to ensure a cleaner, greener, healthier environment. Together with, promoting the Greater Manchester Bee Network and the Get on Board Campaign.
This is an annual event ran by Tameside Music Service and the Greater Manchester Music Hub, to promote singing.
Tameside Music Service champions access to music for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or circumstances. They support the community in Tameside by providing enriching musical activities that everyone can enjoy.
The service work closely with local organisations to create musical opportunities for young people and adults with additional needs, offering a truly bespoke service that caters to the specific needs of the group.

“It also highlights the power of music and singing to put the spotlight on messages that are close to people’s hearts, such as looking after the environment and promoting clean air for generations to come.”
