Greater Manchester Police have imposed a Section 60 authority which began at 8:30pm yesterday evening and will end at 8:30pm this evening
It comes after a number of unrelated incidents in the local area
A large knife which was subsequently hidden and recovered by officers at around 6:30pm near to Harpurhey Shopping Centre. A 14 and 16-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with this and remain in custody for questioning.
A serious assault at around 9pm on Carisbrook Street where a 35-year-old man has been arrested after the victim suffered a serious head injury that is thankfully not believed to be life threatening. The suspect also remains in custody.
A group of males also at around 9pm at Victoria Avenue in relation to anti-social behaviour, no arrests have been in made into this incident currently with enquiries continuing.
High-visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area to provide reassurance to the local community whilst enquiries continue into the incidents.
Harpurhey Councillor Joanne Green said: “We are very concerned to hear about this criminal behaviour in Harpurhey but welcome and support this action by Greater Manchester Police.”
Detective Superintendent David Meeney of GMP’s City of Manchester district said;
“I would like to reassure our local community that we strongly believe these separate and unconnected incidents are not related to any tensions from the sad death of Nathaniel Shani last week in the same area. Our condolences are still with his family who are still coming to terms with the tragic news whilst a murder investigation continues.
“This Section 60 authority has been put in place for 24 hours to keep the public who live and work within this area safe.
“We have active investigations ongoing related to all three most recent incidents and have made good progress in identifying those we believe are involved and had ultimately resulted in their arrests overnight.
“We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to local residents; however, we use these powers only when proportionate and necessary.
“By enforcing the Section 60 in the area, we will work to minimise any violent behaviour and prevent any further serious incidents going forward as our main priority is to keep the public safe.”
