Salford City Council has gained £2.7 million in funding to support its most vulnerable residents with key costs this winter.

The new Household Support Fund, which is available now until 31 March 2022, will support households struggling to cover the costs of food, energy and water bills as well as other essentials over winter, with a one-off payment available to those in most need.

With many families across the city still reeling from the financial, physical and mental effects of the COVID 19 pandemic, this is vital funding at a time when it is needed most.

The money will be distributed by Salford City Council’s Salford Assist team. It will primarily be awarded by a grant payment to those who meet eligibility criteria. Salford residents do not need to be in receipt of benefits to apply for the Household Support Fund and all applications will be considered.

Lead Member for Inclusive Economy, Anti-Poverty and Equalities, Councillor Sharmina August, said: “Many Salford residents have felt the severe financial impacts of the pandemic and as we approach the winter period it’s vital households and families can access the support they need. In Salford, we work hard to make sure vulnerable residents are supported in the best way possible. This funding will help us to continue that support and our commitment to building a fairer, more equal society for everyone.”

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “This funding will help the most vulnerable in our communities through what will be a really tough winter period for many. I’d urge anyone who is struggling financially to get in touch and see if you can benefit. The Household Support Fund is in place to support you.”

This support forms part of Salford’s wider Tackling Poverty strategy which aims to make Salford a fairer and more inclusive place where everyone can reach their full potential and live prosperous and fulfilling lives free from poverty and inequality. The funding has come from the Department for Work and Pensions.
