Salford Sonic Fusion Festival returns this week celebrating cutting-edge international explorations in contemporary music from across the globe; blurring the boundaries between avant-garde classical, experimental electronic popular and improvised music.
The exciting contemporary music festival, which crosses all genres in the exploration of innovation, will present 4 days of a wide variety of sonic experiences: from immersive sound-art; to audio-visual and interactive live works with live performers and audience interaction as well as many traditional recitals including UK and world premieres.
The symposium theme for the festival is Zoomusicology and Bio-acoustics – the interplay between animal, insect and human musics. It is open to interested members of the public and will feature many notable international speakers.
The first two days of the festival are based at Salford University’s Media City campus and will feature a Metanast curated concert of electroacoustic and sound art
Patchwork Rattlebag (a Salford-based indie-electronic band); the wonderfully talented pianist Xenia Pestova; the extraordinary percussive imagination of Evaristo Aguilar; as well as an evening of innovative digital performance, including a live streamed trans-Atlantic performance between electronic musicians from the University of Salford and Columbia College Chicago, the mesmerizing interactive table performance by Insook Choi, and the dazzling virtuosity of Collect/Project from Chicago, founded by the flautist Shanna Gutierrez.
The final two days of the festival are located in venues in the more historic area of Salford along the Crescent, and will feature performances from the John Bailey Quintet, the violinist Darragh Morgan, continuing with world premiere performances from composers Marc Yeats and Christine McCombe featuring the Manchester Camerata.
The festival will close in the University’s Peel Hall, with the bill being shared by the University of Salford’s Brass Band, the Adelphi Contemporary Music Group, International Nothing, plus DJ sets William Baldry, Freya Mitchell and Steve Hellier. The climax of the evening will be a set from Zufallig (the latest indie/dance venture from ex-Death in Vegas founding member, Steve Hellier.)

Tickets are free for Salford University Students.For members of the public, full festival passes are priced at £40 for all four days or single day passes are available for £15 via the online store.
