China is on the agenda with Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music after the news swiftly follows the recent announcement of two additional new partnerships for the Manchester conservatoire, with Peking University Academy of Opera and the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain.

Situated in Hangzhou (the capital of China’s Zhejiang Province), ZJCM officially opened in March 2016 and is dedicated to providing exceptional tuition to young musicians at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Over the next three years, from immediate effect, RNCM and ZJCM students and staff will have the opportunity to experience both organisations through collaborative projects and curriculum initiatives, and student and teacher exchange programmes.

Professor Linda Merrick, RNCM Principal, said: ‘The RNCM is constantly looking for exciting opportunities to enhance the experience it offers to both students and staff, and our professional partnerships are integral to ensuring this is possible.

‘We pride ourselves on giving students at undergraduate and postgraduate level real world experiences during their studies, both in the UK and internationally. We’re very much looking forward to developing a collaborative relationship with ZJCM over the coming years, and to creating mutually beneficial projects and initiatives.’

Dame Barbara Woodward, British Ambassador to China, said of the partnership: ‘The UK is forging strong links with China, not just economically but artistically and creatively too. It is wonderful to see that the RNCM, one of the world’s leading music colleges, has embarked on a new partnership with Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, providing young musicians both in the UK and in China the opportunity to experience the highest level of musical training in such culturally inspiring environments.’

In 2012 the RNCM launched The Platform, its international centre for ensemble and vocal training which provides over 400 opportunities each year for students to participate in auditions, education projects and public performances in the UK, Mainland Europe and China. No other UK conservatoire offers this number and breadth of professional experiences to its students.
