Our new pair of reviewers Jed Finnigan & Sharon Maxwell loved their visit to the Royal Exchange

If you are going to do your stage debut, to do it in the round, is a brave undertaking, and Salford born Rowan Robinson did it wonderfully in her role as Jo, the teenage daughter of Helen, played by Jill Halfpenny.

Halfpenny gives an amazing performance as Helen, commanding the stage with her larger than life presence, whilst showing the fragility of her character.

In the first half the play revolves around the relationship of mother and daughter, as they move into yet another dingy flat in late 1950’s Salford.

Shelagh Delaney’s dialogue was brought to life brilliantly by the whole casts fast paced banter, although often funny.

Later we find Jo abandoned once more by her mother, and living with Geoffrey, played by David Moorst.

Geoffrey an extremely likeable and kind young man is always there for Jo, even though he is dealing with his own issues, which he is unable to discuss openly, highlighting the social changes between then and now.

Obadiah as Jimmie , and Andrew Sheridan as Peter give strong supporting performances.
Nishla Smith as the Jazz Singer was ever present , and set the mood of Salford in the 1950’s with her beautifully haunting vocals.

Overall this was a fantastic production, with an amazing cast. Wholly recommended for an entertaining trip to the theatre.
