Ambitious plans to regenerate the heart of Radcliffe are jointly being put forward by Bury council, business and community representatives.
The Radcliffe Regeneration Task Group, which is chaired by Radcliffe North Councillor Jamie Walker, consists of businesses, community groups, senior council officers, faith leaders and the Radcliffe Heritage Society.
The group has been discussing and working on a range of proposals which are aimed at improving the town centre in the short, medium and long term.
The first objective is to enhance the centre with a series of environmental and public realm initiatives, including a shop front improvement scheme, an events programme, improved car parking management, and better business security measures.
Plans include,replacement and/or additional planters/planting features,replacement/additional street furniture, seats, signs, litter bins,artwork/features along the key areas,paving,more lighting,banners/flags,street trees on key routes and strategic locations and better pedestrian routes and signposting.
If approved, the next step would be to draw up more detailed designs and carry out further consultation before work starts. This will include discussions with partners such as TfGM along with local residents and businesses.
Councillor Jamie Walker, chair of the Radcliffe Regeneration Task Group, said: “There has been significant investment in Radcliffe town centre by the council and our partners, including the new bus station, the Lidl store and the refurbishment of Radcliffe Market Hall, together with new housing proposed for the former East Lancs Paper Mill site.
“We want to build on this, and ensure that the town centre environment is improved to increase confidence and future investment in Radcliffe.
“The first phase of this exciting plan will bring forward a range of environmental improvements, but this is just the start – more initiatives will follow over the next few weeks and months to promote and continue the longer-term regeneration of Radcliffe town centre.”
