The former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson has defected to Reform UK, declaring: “I want my country back”

The Ashfield MP had the party whip taken away last month in an Islamophobia row when he refused to apologise for saying that the Mayor of London was being controlled by Islamists

Anderson announced his switch to the right-wing populist party at a press conference alongside party leader Richard Tice in London earlier today

‘I am going to put my country first, the constituency comes second, and then, the party comes third.’ he told the media

A spokesperson for the New Conservative Group of MP’s said

“Responsibility for Lee’s defection sits with the Conservative Party. We have failed to hold together the coalition of voters who gave us an 80 seat majority We cannot pretend any longer that the plan is working. We need to change course urgently”
