Greater Manchester MP and Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner has promised the biggest’ affordable housing boost

Speaking at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool this morning, Rayner said that “A council house changed my life,”

She said that the party was focused on building new houses, banning no-fault evictions and creating more social homes

“Too many people are paying unaffordable private rents. Or living the nightmare of being stuck in a home wrapped in flammable cladding. Whilst leaseholders linger in a system which is a holdover from the medieval ages.”

She said that Rishi Sunak’s housing policy is “the same as his smoking policy…Increase the prices year on year until eventually no one can buy.”

In a wide ranging speech she said her party would reform the planning system to give local councils greater powers to “stand up to vested interests”. adding that it would change the labour market – including banning zero-hour contract and strengthening powers for unions.
