RAINY City Roller Derby have made it to this year’s Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Championship Playoffs in America.
Now in its 11th year of revolutionizing derby and taking the sport’s athleticism and competition to new heights, the International WFTDA Playoffs and Championships bring together the most talented, highly trained skaters and teams from WFTDA member leagues.

Thanks to their five game winning streak this season placing them #26 in the international rankings, the Rainy City Allstars team, based in King Street Oldham, will head to Playoffs in Columbia, South Carolina, USA, 9th-11th September as the #7 seed.

Rainy City are the second English roller derby team to ever make it to the Division 1 Playoffs, following in the footsteps of London Rollergirls who are currently ranked #3 in the world.

Rainy City are set to play Steel City Roller Derby from Pennsylvania in their first game on Friday 9th September, and if they take the victory, will go on to face Jacksonville Rollergirls later that day. Other teams taking part in the same bracket include Denver Roller Derby, Sweden’s Crime City Rollers, and last year’s championship winners Rose City Rollers.

The top three teams from each of the four Division 1 Playoffs will go to compete in the Championships in Portland, Oregon in November.

Allstars Captain Vivien Leigh-thal said “Getting to Playoffs was our number one goal this year as a team, and we’ve worked really hard to make that happen. It feels amazing to have all of our hard work rewarded and be invited over to America to play in such a massive tournament.”

“We’ve increased our training times to get ready for the tournament, but we’re also working hard to raise enough money to cover our travel costs to get across to America.”

Rainy City have set up a gofundme account for donations to the team’s travel costs here – https://www.gofundme.com/columbiaplayoffs
