Manchester Central MP and Labour’s Deputy leader Lucy Powell has described the speculation around who will be chancellor under Andy Burnham as ‘tittle tattle’ and ‘distracting’
Powell told the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire that Ed Miliband would make a ‘good’ Chancellor but she refuses to be be drawn further on it
This morning’s Sunday Times speculates that Andy Burnham could have Ed Miliband as his Chancellor and David Miliband as his Foreign Secretary.
Powell meanwhile told the same programme that there does not need to be a general election now despite calling for one when Liz Truss was prime minister
‘What people need to see now is us getting on with the job, delivering on the manifesto we were elected on only two years ago – a very bold manifesto.
‘We were in very particular times after Liz Truss had crashed the economy making decisions that had nothing to do with what was in the Conservative manifesto
‘We live in a parliamentary democracy where the prime minister is chosen by MPs’
On Keir Starmer: “He has served our party well & we do owe him a great deal of gratitude”
On the same programme Housing Secretary Steve Reed said Labour is “moving very swiftly to uniting behind Andy Burnham” which justifies not having a snap election
