Lucy Powell has told Sky News that Greater Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham should be allowed to stand as an MP in a by-election because he had a ‘huge contribution to make to our national politics’.

The Manchester Central MP and Labour Deputy leader speaking ahead  of local elections taking place across the country told Beth Rigby also said that Keir Starmer is the right leader of the party and that she’s backing him beyond these elections

The elections taking place today are not a referendum on the Government she told Rigby and warned Labour members not to turn in on themselves

Voters today will choose more than 5,000 English councillors in 136 councils including all ten Greater Manchester Councils as well as  six mayors in England; all 129 members of the Scottish Parliament; and all 96 members of an expanded Welsh parliament, the Senedd.
