Police want to speak to a woman who disclosed to a passer-by that she was raped in Clayton back at the beginning of May.

At about 4.30am on Tuesday 9 May a driver stopped on Berry Brow after noticing a distressed woman.

The woman was extremely upset and said that she had been raped by a man in a small light blue car who had offered her a lift home from Piccadilly train station.

She said he stopped the car on Rose Hey Lane in Clayton near to Millstream Animal Shelter where the rape took place.

The passer-by took the woman back near to Piccadilly and later reported the incident to police.

Officers have since been trying to trace the woman and despite extensive enquiries they cannot identify her.

Detective Constable Leanne Gibb, from GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “We want to help this woman in any way we can and I would appeal directly to her to come forward to police.

“I understand you might be scared or worried about telling police but we take reports of rape and any sexual offences extremely seriously and we will do everything in our power to find the man responsible, whilst also supporting you.

“Our priority is you and your safety. If you are reading this then please contact us or St Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre in complete confidence, if you do not feel comfortable reporting it to police.

“I would also urge anyone else who might have information about this attack to please contact police. Maybe you saw a car parked up on Rose Hey Lane in the early hours of Tuesday 9 May, or you too saw this woman but couldn’t stop at the time.

“Any pieces of information could prove vital to this investigation, no matter how small you think it might be.”

To pass on information people can call police on 0161 856 6460 and quote incident number 820 of 9 May 2017 or contact St Mary’s on 0161 276 6515.
