A police operation on Sunday saw police seize nineteen illegal e-bikes in Manchester City Centre

It was part of a proactive operation targeting food delivery riders suspected of riding dangerously

With the uprise in food delivery couriers operating across Greater Manchester, a GM Food Delivery Charter was established earlier this year specifying an agreed code of conduct; outlining legal requirements and regulatory expectations of cyclist couriers and food delivery companies when operating in GM.

The charter was signed by the three leading operators and is being monitored as part of our commitment to improving road safety across the region with the ambition of zero deaths or life-changing injuries involving road traffic in GM by 2040.

This operation was run in conjunction with Home Office Immigration Enforcement, following the government’s announcement of tougher laws to crack down on illegal working and those abusing the gig economy, where workers are paid for freelance work or short-term contracts as opposed to permanent jobs.

Officers also made an arrest yesterday for a violation of visa conditions.

Sgt Jack Lenihan Smith, of our City Centre Neighbourhood Team, said “This operation is about protecting the public and ensuring that everyone using our roads, whether on foot, bike or vehicle can do so safely.

“What was particularly encouraging about Sunday’s operation was the positive engagement we had with members of the public throughout the day.

“Many expressed their appreciation for us addressing what they described as a growing problem that has been impacting their quality of life and sense of safety in the city centre.

“By working with our partners, including Immigration Enforcement and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), we’re enforcing the agreed Food Delivery Charter and sending a clear message: if you’re operating illegally or dangerously, you will be stopped.

“We are committed to maintaining regular high-visibility patrols in the city centre and will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure that those operating within the gig economy do so legally and responsibly and if not, they will be dealt with effectively.”
