Police in Leigh have implemented a Section 34 dispersal order in Leigh town centre following information of anti-social behaviour involving groups of youths.

The measures came into place at 9.15pm last night (Friday 13 March) and will remain in place until 9.15pm on Sunday 15 March 2026.

A section 34 dispersal order allows officers to exclude a person, or people, from an area for up to 48 hours through written notice.

The aim of the notice is to minimise behaviour contributing to, or likely to contribute to anti-social behaviour or crime or disorder in the area.

The dispersal order is contained within the boundaries of Windermere Road, Chester Street, Hope Street, Henrietta Street, Church Street, Charles Street, Chapel Street (including 91–93), Leigh Road (including 162–164, Hilton Park), A572 (Spinning Jenny Way / Market Street), A578 (Wigan Road), Parsonage Retail Park, St Helens Road , Twist Lane, returning to Windermere Road – as shown in the map pictured.

Inspector Paul O’Donnell from Wigan district said:

“We have implemented a Section 34 dispersal order in Leigh town centre as we continue to combat youth-related anti-social behaviour in the area.

“For the last several weeks, we have seen groups of up to 40 youths congregating around Bradshawgate, Leigh Bus Station, and surrounding service‑yard areas, causing harassment, alarm and distress to the public and businesses.

“My plea to the general public and more importantly parents of any youths in the Leigh area is to help us look out for where these children are, we need your help to fight this repeated anti-social behaviour in the area, and with you reporting anything to us, this will certainly help us do that.”
