Police are digging on Saddleworth Moor after possible human remains were discovered by an author who has been researching the murder of Keith Bennett, a victim of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

Police say he had discovered what he believes are potential human remains in a remote location on the Moors and he agreed to meet with officers yesterday afternoon to elaborate on his find and direct them to a site of interest.

What was found was understood to be a Skull believed to be of a child of around twelve years old.

Detectives are also looking at a small sample of material thought to be clothing found buried 3ft underground beside the skull.

It is 58 years since Keith was snatched and killed by serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady.

Keith Bennett is the only victim of the Moors Murders never to be found after his killers refused to say where he was buried.Keith’s mother Winnie went to her grave without knowing the truth.

The 12-year-old was last seen on June 16, 1964, when he left his family home to stay with his grandmother.

Hindley lured the teenager into a van by asking him to help with some boxes

Police said on Friday that

“The site was assessed late last night and, this morning, specialist officers have begun initial exploration activity.

“We are in the very early stages of assessing the information which has been brought to our attention but have made the decision to act on it in line with a normal response to a report of this kind.

“It is far too early to be certain whether human remains have been discovered and this is expected to take some time.

“We have always said that GMP would act on any significant information which may lead to the recovery of Keith and reunite him with his family. As such, we have informed his brother of the potential development – he does not wish to be contacted at this time and asks that his privacy is respected.”
