Both Houses of Parliament have convened this morning to pay tribute to the former sovereign who died yesterday

Leading the tributes Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle told MP’s

“She is wed in our minds with the crown and all it stands for” adding

‘While she understood the inescapable nature of duty, which sometimes must have weighed upon her heavily, she also delighted in carrying it out. For she was, the most devoted monarch.’

Liz Truss described her as one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known and the rock upon which modern Britain was built

Turning to the new sovereign she said of King Charles III, “Even as he mourns, his sense of duty and service is clear” adding

“The crown endures, our nation endures and in that spirit I say God save the King.”

Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer said that “She didn’t simply reign over us she lived alongside us.”

‘It feels like we are once again in a moment in our history where everything is spinning, the nation requires a still point” adding

‘The Queen’s death ‘robs our country of our stillest point, our greatest comfort’ at a time we need it most’

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that in their final meeting at Balmoral two days before her death, the Queen was “as radiant, knowledgeable and fascinated by politics as I can remember”
