CHARLES Wright says “things are getting into place” for him as he targets a much stronger performance when Belle Vue welcome Ipswich to the National Speedway Stadium on June 7.

The 2019 British Champion opting out of racing last year, choosing instead to “focus on other aspects” of his life, including moving house with fiancé Leanne.

But even despite his lengthy absence from the track, he has taken every opportunity since the New Year to squeeze in as many practice laps as possible.

And after trialling new equipment in the build-up to 2021, Wright says he’s beginning to feel more comfortable with his machinery and, with a few meetings under his belt, more settled.

He said: “I’ve struggled with a few things set-up wise since Belle Vue’s first match. It’s been so long since I last rode, I just needed a few meetings to settle back into the routine.

“The season has only just started, though, and I know I’m making improvements with each race. I just need to keep pushing and I know I will get back to my usual form.”

Glimpses of Wright’s potential are already showing in his results, having recorded 11 for Championship side Redcar against Edinburgh on May 30 and 7+2 for the BikeRight Aces at Peterborough.

As a former Panthers rider, his experience around the East of England Arena paid dividends not only for his own performance, but for his team mates as well.

He said: “Drawing at home was disappointing, but a draw isn’t a loss and going to Peterborough and getting the four points was just what we wanted.

“After switching to my second bike in the home leg, I felt much quicker and I had a much better night in the second match which was a massive boost for me.

“In the meetings I’ve had I’ve started to figure out what is working for me and what isn’t, and I know that with a little more patience the results will follow.”

The BikeRight Aces continue their Premiership campaign at the National Speedway stadium on June 7 against the Ipswich Witches, tapes up at 7:30pm.
