A nurse employed at Royal Oldham Hospital has been banned from practicing after an inquiry found that she had falsified clinical room daily checklists
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) heard that Emma Bilsborough while working in the hospital as anacting lead nurse had been inputting staff initials to show safety checks had been completed when they had not been.
They also heard that Mrs Bilsborough inappropriately closed an incident in August 2021, which related to the bruising of an elderly patient, by inputting incorrect clinical details and allegedly stating an investigation had been carried out when it had not.
A witness told the hearing that they had seen Mrs Bilsborough falsifying records included fridge checks – carried out to ensure medication is kept at the correct temperature – as well as treatment room checks and cleaning checks.
Another witness told the hearing that Emma Bilsborough (lead nurse) was filling in gaps on
the signing sheets for checks that had not been done within the clinical room, and was signing my initials
Meanwhile the daughter of the elderly patient found with the black eye said
I found her to have a severe black eye. I assume she must have had a fall but neither the day staff or night staff had logged such an event. I therefore asked for an incident to be raised as to how this could have happened, I have heard nothing
The failed to turn up for the NMC hearing, which took place over 10 days from 1 to 12 September.
The tribunal found Ms Bilsborough’s actions had amounted to “serious misconduct” and that there was a real risk of medicine being stored incorrectly as a result of the fake fridge checks, something which could compromise patient safety.
She has been struck off the nursing register but will be given the opportunity to appeal.
