Northern Powerhouse minister Jake Berry has unveiled the first brand new trains to be seen on the Northern Rail Network.

A total of 98 brand new diesel and electric trains will be rolled out across the Northern network, which spans the North West, North East, Yorkshire and the Humber and parts of the East Midlands, over the coming months.

Replacing outdated Pacer trains, their introduction is in addition to the refurbishment and modernisation of all other trains on the network.

On a visit to the Edge Hill depot in the city, the Northern Powerhouse minister joined Northern CEO David Brown to mark the unveiling of the state-of-the-art trains.

Barry White, Chief Executive of Transport for the North, said: “It’s been a tough year for rail users in the North of England, and elsewhere. It’s really good that the planned investment we have heard so much about is now beginning to filter through to those that really need it.”  

“Rail North, now part of Transport for the North, set the standard for visionary investment when it encouraged both Northern and TransPennine Express to commit to ambitious development programmes. The operators are now starting to deliver much-needed new and refurbished trains and further improvements to services as part of a £1 billion programme of investment and there is more to come.”  

The new Class 195 DMU and Class 331 EMU trains built by CAF trains, which are due to start entering service by the end of the year, will offer new standards of comfort, free customer Wi-Fi, air conditioning, at-seat power and seat reservation systems.

The new trains are just part of the improvements Northern is making to transform its customers’ rail experience. Last month Northern launched its first fully refurbished train – a Class 158 – with many of the same features as the new trains and will be the blueprint for the refurbishment of the rest of the Northern fleet.  

The train enhancements will continue to be complemented by further investment including an increase in services and improvements to more than 400 Northern stations.  

Service enhancements and rolling stock investment delivered via the Northern and TransPennine Express franchises will deliver more than 2,000 extra services per week, providing a 37% capacity uplift into five key commuter cities during the morning peak.
