A new piece of street art, that will form part of a wider art project in the area, has been unveiled in Levenshulme.
From kingfishers to all things Manchester, the neighbourhood in South Manchester is set to benefit from hand painted murals carefully planned and painted by local artist Richard Preston and supported by local residents.
The stunning painting of a vibrant kingfisher was unveiled today (Wednesday 15 February) at a small ceremony with local council members, artist, MP, providers and residents. It will form part of the wider Levenshulme Street Art Trail, a project by Manchester City Council and partners, that is due to be completed later this year.
The street art has been commissioned by the Council, in collaboration with local partners and members of the community, with the aim of creating a pride in the local nature and to help brighten up the local environment.
Local artist Richard Preston has already created and designed nature pieces across the area. This latest piece will be followed with more throughout 2023.
In addition to this, the Council hope that residents will see the murals and get involved with art, helping their wellbeing and encouraging them to talk to their neighbours, explore the local area and to take part in the Levenshulme Art Trail.
The project aims to brighten up the community, increase pride in Levenshulme and to have a greater appreciation of the diverse and beautiful nature in the areas.
Manchester City Council’s Neighbourhood team, alongside artist Richard Preston and the local community are currently working on wider mural designs that illustrate local nature and truly represent the heart and soul of the area.
Local residents are encouraged to visit the murals and look after the wildlife hotspots in the area, including Highfield Park, The Secret Lake and other biodiverse places in Levenshulme.
The latest mural is of a kingfisher and can be found on Emley Street, Levenshulme, M19 3BZ.
