A new environmental funding programme is being launched this week in Manchester and is looking for people to come forward with ideas for schemes such as tree planting, creating an orchard or community garden or learning about tree care.

The scheme, which will provide two £10,000 grants available to help communities green their neighbourhoods over the next 12 months, is the brainchild of the Community Forest Trust (CFT) and TD Direct Investing.

Stephen Falder, Chairman, Community Forest Trust, said; “The TD Green Streets programme is looking for innovative ideas that use urban forestry to help address local challenges – new ways to spread the benefits of trees to places like Greater Manchester. It could be anything from planting street or shade trees or creating a community orchard to building a rain garden or developing a citizen pruner programme.

Tony Hothersall from Community Forest Trust said: “The Community Forest Trust has a proven track record of delivering these type of projects – yielding major economic, social and environmental benefits to communities across England.”

“By joining with TD, this new partnership and funding will enable us to develop innovative opportunities to enhance our urban environments. These projects will make a lasting difference for the benefit of the community and the local environment. There are many benefits to planting more trees in urban areas – from improving local air quality to reducing the risk of flooding and TD Green Streets will enable us to find new ways to spread those benefits more widely.”

If you have an idea for how to bring the benefits of urban forestry to your area, please visit tdgreenstreets.co.uk for more information.

The deadline to submit a proposal is December 12, 2014. Two projects, will be selected and announced in March, 2015, and will be delivered in partnership with the Community Forest Trust by the end of November, 2015.
