We Are Dreamers’ is an immersive installation of dream boxes which have been made by community groups, schools and individuals across Stockport.

Inspired by a poem by WW1 poet Siegfried Sassoon it reminds visitors that soldiers were ordinary people with their own hopes and dreams for the future.

Running from 11th November 2018 – 9th February 2019, this will feature ‘Dream Boxes’ made by the people of Stockport, in which they share their own unique hopes and dreams for themselves and their families.

Wire War Horse (11th November – 9th December) is a striking life wire and size steel installation created by Stockport artist and sculptor Paul Tavernor. Central to his ‘To The Wire’ exhibition, the War Horse stands over seven feet high and features 40 red poppies – one for every 200,000 horses and mules that were killed as service animals during the First World War. As a poignant addition, barbed wire will be wrapped around its head and plinth to demonstrate the brutality of war.

Whether you tie a knot in a handkerchief, put notes in your mobile phone or hold ceremonies ‘How do you remember?’ will be the question posed by The Art of Remembering exhibition running from 11th November 2018 – 24th February 2019. WWI objects from Stockport’s Museum collections will be on display for the first time. This exhibition will also explore the unique history of Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery.

They Shall Not Grow Old is an exhibition by local artists Andrew Parker and Henry Quick who will look at how we commemorate our fallen heroes through their photography and mixed media work. This is inspired by their visits to many war memorials in Stockport and the region.

An exhibition created by pupils from St Thomas’ Church of England School in Stockport town centre will also feature as part of the memorial. Working with local artist, Pauline Wood, the primary school children will be creating pieces to remember the 147 former students that died during World War One.

All of the exhibitions are free for visitors to attend as part of Stockport Remembers.
Councillor Alex Ganotis, Leader of Stockport Council said: “As the centenary of the end of World War One draws nearer it is right that we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Each of these new exhibitions will look at a different element of war and remembering and I’d encourage residents to go along and explore them for themselves.”
