A new bridge spanning the Ashton Canal has now been completed.

Following several months of improvement works a permanent and much improved crossing has been created, linking New Islington Green to the marina.

The existing Grade II lock bridge when in use made it difficult for pedestrians and impossible for cyclists.

This was understandably a significant impediment and one which needed to be remedied, given the growth of population in the area and the need to preserve good transport links to and from the marina and public transport links.

The step free link also makes it far easier for people with disabilities to travel through the area, something which was previously harder to accomplish.

Given the popularity and continued growth of the New Islington area putting new and improved infrastructure in place was a top priority for the Council.

The new crossing features a widened path, lighting to deter antisocial behaviour and a non-slip surface to ensure safety during the wetter months.
