A national treasure is on display for the very first time at Manchester Museum
Henry Dresser’s author’s copy of A History of the Birds of Europe is now on display in the Living Worlds gallery at your Museum.
This major acquisition was completed in collaboration with John Rylands Research Institute and Library, preventing a landmark ornithological work from leaving the country. And now it’s on public display for the first time!
This new display tells the heartbreaking tale of the Slender billed curlew, which featured in Dresser’s anthology but is now considered extinct.
However, it was encouraging to hear from RSPB England’s Alisdair McKee at the launch event about how works like this can inform conservation efforts.
Bird populations are declining across the world and using our collections, we hope to inspire future generations of conservationists and address some of the biggest questions of our time.
