Mykonos might well be known as one of Europe’s top summer destinations, but this fascinating Greek island can also be a pretty amazing location in Autumn too, especially as the weather in Manchester begins to cool in the run up to winter.

Normally, people who holiday in Mykonos in the summer months have flown in to JMK airport for wild parties and fun evening events. But there are plenty of others that believe this stunning destination is far more enjoyable at the end of the season and during the autumn months. Touchdown and visit any of the ten towns on the island including Ornos where you will find no shortage of luxury Mykonos hotels. If you are considering visiting this island during the fall season or looking for reasons to, we have a few suggestions that might work as a reason to visit.

Harvest Greek Grapes

The fall is the season for harvesting grapes on Mykonos. One of the best places for you to get involved with this is the 19th century local monastery is Mykonos Vioma Organic Farm and Winery. Set amongst 3.6 hectares, this is owned by Asimomytis family who run an authentic wine and farm to bottle experience.

As you take a wander around the monastery vineyard you can find out all about the process of how the wine is made. On top of this, you will be able to meet the farm animals and pets while sampling delicious home made honey, vine leaves, vinegar and, of course, the wine.

Any time from September onwards, when its harvest time at the farm, locals visit the monastery making it a great place for tourists to immerse themselves in Mykonian folk music, while participating in barefoot grape stomping and enjoying fine cuisine and the wines of the Cyclades.

Enjoy Fine Dining In Little Venice

Speaking of fine cuisine, why not head over to the Island’s famous Little Venice district which is both romantic and atmospheric. Due to its mesmerising sunsets and quirky restaurant balconies that hang out over the water’s edge, this quaint little town truly delights. In the old days, during the 16th and 17th centuries these buildings were used by pirates and traders to load and unload their precious cargo as quickly as possible.

Take A Helicopter Ride Over The Island

If you are looking for something a little more high octane, you could always take a ride in a helicopter and fly over the island taking in all of the sights and landmarks of this truly stunning island. While Mykonos in autumn from the land is exciting enough, it is even more so when exploring by air in your own private helicopter for the day. Gasp in wonder as your pilot flies you over verdant landscapes including the golden sandy beaches of the coastline.

As you fly over Mykonos, you will be able to enjoy bird’s eye view of the picture postcard perfect windmills that are scattered over the island as the sugar cube buildings, small churches, lighthouses and the aforementioned vineyards.

Take A Boat To Delos

Neighbouring Delos was once a religious centre and, as the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, is today one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Although ravaged by the sea, winds and sands of time, the temples, sanctuaries and statues of Greek gods still exist today alongside the stone terrace of the lions statues and ancient mosaics. As luck would have it, it is only a small and really rather pleasant boat trip from Mykonos so taking a boat trip comes highly recommended.

Take a walk around the island and imagine what life would have been like back in its heyday. Despite its historical value, you are able to touch some of the soft but jagged stones of the ruined columns allowing you to admire the curves of the sculpted marble statues that will transport you back to a simpler time.

Visit The Art Galleries Of Mykonos

The great thing about visiting Mykonos in Autumn is that visitors are able to discover the art galleries without the summer crowds. For centuries now, the exquisite landscapes of Mykonos have attracted artists and inspired writers. You will find these small studios and art galleries hidden inside houses behind bright blue doors mainly in Mykonos Town.

Head inside these blue doors and you will be able to admire paintings of Cycladic landscapes and deserted sandy beaches. Learn all about the local people and their traditions and history. Pick up a one of a kind gift or two for loved ones back home or even something that you can display on your coffee table back at your own home after you have perused the brushstrokes on the colourful ceramics and glasswork. So you can see why visiting Mykonos in Autumn should really be on your to do list.
