The Bloods returned to their old defensive frailties for their short trip to Mossley along with a bizarre ending to the game.

Dave Pace’s team found themselves a goal down after just three minutes when Mitchell Bryant was the first to react after a long range free kick bounced off the defensive wall to easily tap in and seven minutes later a long punt down the field from Mossley keeper Liam Flynn was converted by Mossley skipper Andy Keogh.

Droylsden were forced into a change just before the half hour mark, Billy Hasler Cregg replacing the injured Brandon Zibaka but just a minute later were three down in farcical circumstances when a Jacob Wood back pass trickled under the feet of keeper Craig Ellison.

The Bloods pulled one back just before half time through Dominic Smith.

If the away fans thought the half time team talk would repair the damage, they were to be disappointed. Mossley had three great chances after the break, springing the Bloods off side trap but their fourth finally came as full back Calder Denson’s cross from the by line was only half dealt with by Ellison whose parry was bundled over the line by Bryant.

That produced the most bizarre decision of the match with Ellison being immediately substituted and showing his displeasure by storming straight down the tunnel.

But it wasn’t the last strange incident of the game as play was held up for five teen minutes after an injury to the referee Alan Clayton and calls into the crowd for anyone with match official qualification went unanswered.

The game resumed minus one linesman but there was still enough time for Mossley to claim a fifth with centre half Thomas Dean heading home at the far post from a corner.
