The Government’s Chief Scientist Sir Patrick Vallance told the Downing Street press conference said he expected the new variant of the coronavirus to spread across the country and hinted that more of England could soon be moved into tier 4.
Vallance said that further restrictions would be likely needed in England and that measures may “need to be increased … not reduced”.
He added that mixing over Christmas would be a likely cause of further spikes in Covid case numbers in the coming weeks.
