In the Champoinship Leam Richardson was pleased with his side’s performance after they battled to earn a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday evening.

In a close encounter at the DW Stadium, Josh Magennis put the home side in front with an excellent solo goal, before Karlan Grant found the equaliser in the 22nd minute with a low strike from the edge of the penalty area. Latics continued to push to regain the lead, and came close through Jason Kerr and James McClean, though their efforts came to no avail and the honours remained even in the Championship clash.

In the Papa Johns trophy,Eoin Toal made his Bolton Wanderers’ debut and midfield man Josh Sheehan a welcome return to action as the Whites made a winning start to their  campaign.

Amadou Bakayoko’s first goal of the season and a late second-half double from substitute Dion Charles, wrapped around Kieran Sadlier’s fine finish, gave Wanderers maximum points in their Group B opener.

Stockport County began their Papa John’s Trophy Group C campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Port Vale, as Chris Hussey’s second-half strike won it for the home side.

Hussey found the top corner from the edge of the area just past the hour mark to earn his side three points, just minutes after Paddy Madden had hit the crossbar at the other end.

Rochdale secured a point from their opening Papa John’s Trophy group stage tie  after an entertaining encounter against Accrington Stanley at the the Wham Stadium.

After the game finished 3-3, the match went to penalties, where Stanley gained an extra point from a 4-3 shoot out win.
