Transport bosses are today celebrating winning yet another award as the new Exchange Square Metrolink stop took top honours at this year’s Light Rail Awards.
The stop, which opened in December last year, scooped top spot in the ‘Project of the Year under 50m Euros’ category beating off fierce competition from at home and abroad.

Collecting the award on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester, Peter Cushing, Metrolink Director, said: “I speak on behalf of everyone who worked on delivering the project, on time and within budget, when I say that we’re all absolutely delighted to pick up this award.

The Exchange Square stop, which was designed by Ian Simpson Architects – is the centrepiece of the new line extension that now sees double the service frequency on the Oldham-Rochdale Line between Shaw and Crompton and the city centre.

The unique and stylish stop, which now provides even better access to the city’s main retail district, was made possible thanks to a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant and represents an early taster for what customers can expect when the full Second City Crossing opens early in 2017.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “Exchange Square is a pivotal addition to the Metrolink network that has already allowed us to increase services between Shaw and Crompton and the city.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming even more people to Exchange Square once we’re able to get more services to and through it with the opening of the Second City Crossing early next year.

“I am absolutely delighted that the stop has been recognised at industry level. Receiving such accolades is always rewarding and a testament to the efforts of everyone involved in the project.”
