Manchester’s former Mayor, the man who designed Joy Division’s Album covers and former Lancashire batsman  are among those honoured in this year’s New Year Honours.

Carl Austin-Behan who was Manchester’s first openly gay Mayor receives an OBE, Clive Lloyd is knighted while Peter Saville receives an MBE.

Many people in the charity sector receive honours including Duncan Craig who set up a charity Survivors which celebrated their tenth anniversary this year to help men who had been raped or sexually abused receives an OBE while Nick Buckley the man behind Mancunian Way receives an MBE for services to young people and to the community in Greater Manchester.

Jennifer Burden who worked for the Association of Science Education, the University of York, and then became the inaugural Director of the National STEM Centre also gets an MBE for services to education along with Michelle Proudman Lead Nurse for Community Health in North Manchester, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust for services to Community Nursing and Ashraf Ali , Head of Projects, British Muslim Heritage Centre for services to Community Relations

Special Constabulary Chief Officer Mike Walmsley has been awarded an MBE for his commitment and dedication to the role and how he has inspired others to continue in their support of GMP.

Among those receiving the British Empire Medal, Brian Seddon for community services in Atherton, Dorothy Ward, for the same in Radcliffe, and Pamela Jane Corry in Harpurhey.

Subnum  Harrif-Khan the Culture Lead for Greater Manchester Libraries and Reading Lead for Libraries Connected North West is also awarded as is eighty six year old Alan Wrigley from Oldham who has raised in excess of £70,000 for local charities.

Ninety two year old Gordon Schofield for Cheadle is awarded for services to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and to charity and ninety six year old Gisela Fieldman who speaks regularly to groups of children at the National Holocaust Centre and Museum in Nottinghamshire gets her award for services to Holocaust education along with her ninety one year old sister Sonja Sternberg.

At the other end of the age scale, thirteen year old Ibrahim Yousaf from Oldham who at the age of twelvestarted by donating all his birthday money to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) charity as well as raising awareness on Twitter is awarded
