Midwives, birth workers and families from Manchester will join a nationwide protest by holding a vigil this weekend.

The event will take place at St Peter’s Square from 2pm and will call for change in the maternity service in the UK which have been described as ‘critically unsafe’.

March for Midwives UK, the national group who have arranged the protests, is a grassroots movement who in their manifesto state that a recent study found a staggering ‘60% of staff are thinking of leaving the profession’ and that ‘for every 30 newly qualified midwives, 29 are leaving’.

The issues within the maternity service has been further placed under the microscope as comments from a whistleblower in Scotland commented that midwives were ‘worked to the bone and underfunded’.

If you cannot show your support on Sunday you can sign a petition to support urgent government investment into maternity services to solve the maternity services staffing crisis here.
