Manchester Art Gallery became the latest of the City’s institutions to close its doors

In a statement issued last night the Gallery said:

The gallery has been at the centre of city life for nearly 200 years, and through its collections, displays and public programmes it has worked with people to ensure creativity, care and consideration inform all aspects of the way we live.

We may be closed for some time, but along with venues small and large across the city, we’ll be working behind the scenes to ensure that our programme of exhibitions and events will be up and running and better than ever for you when we open again.

This is an art school for everybody and for life and we believe in the power of art to make positive social change, free our imaginations, lift our spirits and bring joy to our lives. When we emerge on the other side of this, we will need our galleries and museums more than ever.

While the gallery is closed, we’ll bring you ideas, through online programmes, about how you can use our collection to support your creativity and mental wellbeing.

Yesterday saw most of the City’s Galleries closing with the Science Museum and People’s History Museum closing from last night

The Science Museum issued the following statement

While our doors will be closed for a while, our collection – and the inspirational stories it contains – will remain open to you online. Our talented teams, who have dealt so professionally with the challenges of the past few weeks, will find new ways to ignite your curiosity and lift your spirits during some difficult days ahead.

Thank you for support for our museums and thank you for pulling together at this concerning time. We know you’ll bear with us; if you have tickets to upcoming events, we will be in touch soon.

Given the uncertainty we are all facing together, it is not possible to say when our museums will be able to re-open to visitors. But we look forward to welcoming back old friends and igniting the curiosity of many more people who haven’t yet had the chance to visit us.
