A man who is believed to be aged in his 20’s has been killed after a smash in which a car failed to stop for police on Wellington Road in the early hours of this morning

He was driving a Fiat Punti which was involved in a collision with a BMW as well as two parked cars which were unoccupied at the time on Wellington Road North near to the junction of Crossley Road.

Two men – who were in the BMW and both aged in their 20’s – were treated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct by GMP’s Professional Standards Branch in line with normal policy.

Inspector Daniel Byrne, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Sadly a man has lost his life as a result of this collision. Our thoughts remain with his family.

“Road closures are currently in place on the A6 whilst enquiries remain ongoing. It is advised that commuters avoid the area where possible and instead use alternative routes. We thank the public for their patience as we deal with this incident.”
