The Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Paul Murphy OBE is urging everyone who has been moved by the plight of Syrian refugees to donate to organisations already working hard to improve the situation both in the UK and across the globe.
The Lord Mayor has echoed advice from Refugee Action who have said the best way to help with the current refugee crisis is to donate money to charities that are already improving conditions in refugee camps and providing support to everyone that has been displaced.
Refugee Action is a national charity that provides advice and support to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and campaigns for a fairer asylum system.
Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Paul Murphy OBE said: “We have all been moved by the refuge crisis currently unfolding across all of Europe, the scale and severity of which is truly shocking.
“The daily stream of news and images from the media act as constant reminder of the magnitude of a problem which requires a global response – which isn’t to say we can’t all help in our own way.
“I’d ask that everyone who has wondered what they can do to ease this ongoing suffering to make a donation to one of the organisations already doing their upmost to improve the lives of those forced to leave their homes in the most dire of circumstances.
“It doesn’t matter how much you can afford to give, even the smallest contribution will help charities like Refugee Action continue to improve conditions for refugees. Manchester has a long and proud history of supporting those in difficult times and I know collectively we can make a very real difference.”
Julie Kashirahamwe, Manchester Area Manager for Refugee Action said: “The public’s response to this crisis has been incredible and will be a lifesaver for Refugee Action and the people we support. We are a small charity reliant on the support of local communities to fund our vital work providing a lifeline for refugees across Manchester.
“This week we are launching an emergency appeal to raise a £100,000 with every penny going towards emergency support for some of the most vulnerable refugees, so that no one seeking safety will be forced to live on the streets or in poverty.”
Manchester is also preparing to take its share of refugees with plans being finalised once the government has announced the national response and provided detail of what funding will be made available.
