Oldham Council announces the passing of long-serving Hollinwood councillor, Brian Ames.
The Labour party member first became a ward member in 1974 and he served the Failsworth West ward until 1980.
Brian made his career in the construction industry and industrial relations and – amongst other duties – served on the Housing Committee and was also vice-chair of the Buildings Works sub committee during his first spell in public office.
He was back in the Council Chamber in 2004 when he was first elected to serve Hollinwood until 2006.
Brian returned to represent that ward again in 2012 and since then has served on Oldham Council’s overview and scrutiny, planning and audit committees.
He was also vice chair of the Failsworth and Hollinwood District Executive committee and a member of the Greater Manchester Health and Scrutiny Board.
A dedicated local councillor he described representing Hollinwood as being “both a privilege and an honour”.
Brian was 81 years old and retired. He died at the weekend having spent his final days at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Royton battling Mesothelioma.
He leaves behind his second wife, Teresa, who had been married to for 37 years and they had lived in Hollinwood for the past 27 years. Brian also had two children and five grandchildren from his first marriage.
Cllr Jean Stretton, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “I am very sad to confirm the news of Brian Ames’ death.”
“Brian has a long record of public service and he will be sorely missed by his party colleagues and all the local residents he knew and represented over the years.
“He often picked up casework just walking his dog around Hollinwood, although he never minded that, and he took a genuine interest in local people and organisations.
“All our thoughts and prayers are with Brian’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
The borough flag has been flying at half-mast today at Oldham Civic Centre as a mark of respect.
