Leicester has become the first place in the UK to be locally locked down this evening after the Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced that non essential  shops and all schools would close along with a delayed opening of pubs and restaurants.

Hancock also warned against any non-essential travel to and from the city.

The new measures agreed for the city will be reviewed after two weeks from Saturday, he added

Leicester he says, had as an infection rate of 135 per 100,000 people, which is three times higher than the next highest local area

Hospital admissions are between 6 and ten a day, he says, which is also higher than in other places.

Schools in Leicester will have to close on Thursday, except for keyworker children, and those shielding will continue to do so beyond 6 July.

Everyone with symptoms in Leicester needs to come forward, Hancock says, and extra funding will be made available to increase testing.
