Lancashire’s overseas signing Daryl Mitchell has been named this morning as one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the year.

The New Zealander was joined by fellow Kiwi Tom Blundell  England’s Ben Foakes, and Matthew Potts, and India’s Harmanpreet Kaur – the first India women’s cricketer to be named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year.

Mitchell excelled in last summer’s test series in England, achieving the most runs in the series (538 at an average of 107.60).

He became the 15th New Zealand men’s player to score a test century at Lord’s, putting on 195 runs with Blundell in the second innings.

He then backed up his ton with 190 in the second match in Nottingham, combining for a 236-run first innings stand with fellow century-maker Blundell .

He struck a third century in as many matches in the last test in Leeds, which made him the fifth New Zealand player to score hundreds in three successive tests.

He made his test debut  late 2019 as a replacement for the injured Colin de Grandhomme and scored his maiden Test hundred at the start of 2021, in an innings win over Pakistan in Christchurch, and his first ODI century that March.
