The Labour party will introduce legislation to end lease holding in the first 100 days of getting into government if elected.

Shadow Levelling up and Housing Secretary Lisa Nandy says that in January the government rightly promised to abolish the feudal system of leasehold, but now they appear to be rowing back.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities says the reforms will come later this year

“Fundamental reform is long overdue. It’s time to end leasehold.” said the MP for Wigan adding

“It is nothing short of a scandal that there is still no timetable for ending leasehold on new builds and introducing a workable system of commonhold to replace existing leasehold homes, despite near-universal agreement that leasehold is a feudal form of tenure that should be a thing of the past.“

The party will force a non-binding vote on abolishing the leasehold system in England and Wales in the House of Commons today
