The Tories have suffered a double by election defeat overnight with Labour overturning two huge majorities in Wellingborough and Kingswood

Labour recorded a 28.5% swing at the Wellingborough by-election, marking its second-biggest swing ever overturning a 19,000 majority while in Kingswood it overturned an 11,000 majority to take the South Gloucestershire seat

The Tories have now suffered the highest number of by-election losses in a single Parliament since 1960

The results are a major blow for Rishi Sunak and, along with recession news, dent his hopes of wrestling back momentum while Kier Starmer will be a relieved man following the controversy over his candidate in the Rochdale by election

The result “shows people are ready to put their trust in a Labour government”, said Labour leader Keir Starmer.
